Can Am Maverick Turbo R – Can-Am has taken control of the world of high-performance sport UTVs with the introduction of the 2017 Maverick X3 X rs Turbo, the first production turbocharged UTV with 72 inches of width and 2 feet of suspension travel. As the world of extreme performance UTVs tried to catch up for 2018, BRP upped their game and stakes with the Turbo R Mavericks jumping from 154 horsepower to an incredible 172 horsepower line. For 2019, Can-Am has refined and defined the Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R with a full locking front differential and high-tech control module. We recently had the opportunity to test drive two Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R’s at Glamis, one with the regular version and the other with BRP-PAC accessories.
Only the X3 X rs model comes standard with an aluminum roof attached to Dzus fasteners, and up to 2 feet of adjustable travel is provided by high-end Fox Podium 2.5 front and 3.0 rear RC2 shocks with adjustable high- and low. -Speed compression rings, rebound and crossover and preload.
Can Am Maverick Turbo R
In 2018, Can-Am introduced the Smart-Lock Edition Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R with an all-new locking front differential designed in conjunction with Team Industries. The Front Differential Module (FDM) controls the Smart-Lock differential and coordinates with the DPS to select assist maps for four driving modes, including Trail and Trail Active. It also controls four-wheel EBS and hill descent mode. The Smart-Lok X3 X rs Turbo R was $27,499, while the standard X3 X rs was $26,899 to $27,099 (Platinum Satin). There is no Smart-Lock edition for 2019, as the new Smart-Lock technology makes its way into most Maverick X3 models, most notably the X3 X rs Turbo R.
Can Am X3 X Rs Turbo R
The X3 Ergo-Lock seats are comfortable, adjustable and secure, and the X rs is equipped with a four-point seat belt with ignition shut-off if the driver’s seat belt is not fastened. Tall people will hit their outer knees on the door lock cover.
The 2019 Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R is $27,299, the 72-inch X3 X rc Turbo R is $28,999, and the 74.7-inch X3 X mr Turbo R is $25,999. The comparable Polaris RZR XP Turbo S is $29, and the 27-inch RZR XP Turbo Dynamics Edition is $24,999. The normally aspirated, 64-inch Textron Wildcat XX LTD is $21,999.
Seriously fast. The 172-horsepower, turbocharged, intercooled Ace triples the serious pull, and the Quick Response System X (QRS-X) CVT works quickly and powers four 30×10-14 Bighorn 2.0 tires. If your X3 X rs Turbo R doesn’t lock you into the Ergo-Lock seat, attach the factory four-point harness! The driver’s seat belt contains the ignition switch if it is not fastened. At Glamis we put it in 4WD, and the Turbo R went up steep hills with serious power and torque. Top speed is around 80 mph even in the open desert.
Front travel is 22 inches thanks to gullwing, wrapped A-arms and Fox Podium 2.5 RC2 shocks, and the X3 X rs has a wide range of PAC accessories like a front bumper and skid plate, quick-connect whips, side mirrors and LED lights. pods
Can Am X3 Turbo R
It is deliberate but simple. There’s a smooth-engaging CVT, but we’ve also experienced sharper-engaging Mark Burnett Racing X3s. The QRS-X CVT spools up quickly and smoothly, and the Smart-Lock front differential does its job seamlessly. The Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) and 46mm EFI throttle body respond instantly and there is no noticeable turbo lag when hitting the hills. When carving the bowls, the Turbo R is as smooth and hooked as a rally car, with plenty of power always available.
It is like an extension of your arms and legs. The X3 X rs moves in and out of corners with just the right amount of drift and glides predictably, yet is very stable on chops and desert curves. We noticed a bit more body roll and slower handling compared to our lighter and lower base X3 Turbo. Dual torsion bars reduce body roll with long-travel suspension, and 4WD Trail and 4WD Trail Active modes aid fine-tuned handling with a smart-lock front differential.
The Fox RC2 shocks also feature an internal bypass valve (IBP) that has been upgraded from the original 2017 X3 X rs with an additional IBP port. The rear torsion beam does most of the body roll fighting as the front torsion beam does a lot of work in the beam. Low strength rating. The rear brakes have 248mm rotors and twin-disc calipers.
It’s great, but not the best anymore. Wrapped front arms and Fox Podium 2.5 RC2 front shocks provide 22 inches of high-quality travel, while longer rear arms and Fox Podium 3.0 RC2 remote-reservoir IBP shocks provide 24 inches of trophy truck-like travel. The Wildcat XX has a plusher ride, but only 18 inches of front and rear travel. The X3 X rs shocks are more adjustable with dual rate compression adjusters and adjustable rebound damping. It was easy to find the settings we liked on Glamis’ big dunes, with bottoming resistance for big g-outs and good ride quality over the chop and deep shouts of sand highways.

The covered D-ring steering wheel is very comfortable and adjustable with three-mode EPS DPS and differential lock switches. Analog instruments are easy to read and tilt with the steering wheel.
They can be stronger. On paper, the dual brake system with separate master cylinders and 262mm front vented rotors squeezed by twin washers and 248mm rear rotors also attached to two-piston calipers should be the best brakes on the market. Most X3 X rs Turbos we’ve driven have a soft pedal feel, especially when the miles are on. The X3 X rs is 162 pounds lighter than the X3 X rc we tested in March 2018.
It’s like riding on a magic carpet. High speed handling is excellent in open desert conditions and even in the dunes. The new Wildcat XX has a better desert and dune ride, but the Fox 2.5 front shocks and 3.0 rear IBP shocks can be tuned to provide an almost smooth ride, but on the other hand, the XX doesn’t ride as fast. In most situations the X3 Turbo R. Aftermarket companies can make them as good or better than the Textron XX.
The Advanced Airflow Dynamics Quick Response System X (QRS-X) feeds pre-filtered air to the CVT and belts and is joined by a 2019 Smart-Lock front differential that adds a four-mode traction system to the Variable Assist EPS system. Easy control when driving with locked differential.
What Is My 2018 Can Am Maverick X3 Xrs Turbo R Worth?
A Smart-Lock front differential with four drive modes and matching EPS cards is great for mud and rocks, as is 15 inches of ground clearance and up to 2 feet of travel. Two-speed Fox Podium IBP shocks with compression adjustment can be set to compensate for accumulated mud weight or loosened for rock articulation. The HMW full skid and integrated front bumper protect the underside well. However, mud riders will want aftermarket fender extensions and flaps to deal with the thrown mud, and the mud mud wears down the seat runners. Avid mutts will prefer the X mr, and rock hunters will prefer the better-equipped X3 X rc Turbo R over the X rs.
There are great points and not so good points. The Ergo-Lock seats are very comfortable and supportive, and a factory-installed harness is a must with this high-performance UTV. The seating position is low and race-like, and there are some height adjustments in addition to fore-and-aft sliders. We also like the D-ring steering wheel, 1.5-turn steering rack, adjustable EPS and smart-lock system for turning in slow and tight situations. A spacious glove box and ample legroom and shoulder room are also pluses in the futuristic cabin. We don’t like hitting our knees on passenger restraint points and door latch panel protrusions. Having four 30×10-14 Bighorns helps the rear end drift and means your spare (not included, BRP/LSR spare tire holder is $249.99) tire will fit on all four corners. The front brakes are separate from the rear braking system, and twin-disc front calipers squeeze perforated 262mm rotors.
A few minor issues aside, the Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R delivers incredible performance in a well-balanced package of handling and suspension. The Turbo R handles beautifully, so it makes us better drivers. It is an amazing drifter and nimble duner, and it moves through the desert at incredible speeds. High-end internal bypass Fox podiums are highly adjustable for a wide variety of conditions and disciplines and can be easily modified for even higher riding quality. The cabin is also high-tech and equipped with a race-ready four-point harness. And BRP supports the beast with a line of high-quality accessories that make it even better.
