The goal of the program is to help create new or young workers for small businesses in San Diego, with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math skills, as well as marketing and sales personnel in these fields.
San Diego Regional EDC, the group paying the bill, will pay interns $20 an hour, and $500 can be used to work from home. Companies applying to the program will be required to offer 20 hours of work per week for 12-week placements to interns.
The internship project is part of the Advancing San Diego initiative, which is funded by a $3 investment from JPMorgan Chase. Half of this money is directly allocated to the payment of interns, and the remaining 1.5 million USD covers staffing services through Manpower and EDC’s in-house staffing.
The EDC moved the program forward to provide as many jobs as possible during the COVID-19 outbreak, increasing the number of interns in the first cohort and raising the base wage from $16.50 to $20 an hour.

Bree Burris, spokeswoman for the EDC, said: “At a time when businesses and students were worried, we were able to offer paid remote work experience despite the uncertainty of the job market. “That’s why we’ve shifted some of our grant funding to increase the number of students and businesses we can currently support.”
The program is funded in waves, sending groups of interns to companies every few months. The program is almost complete and should be completed in 2022.
The current round of interns is for general engineers such as electrical engineering and systems engineering and the application deadline is this Friday. About 30 companies will be selected from the pool of applicants.
In the first phase, 38 software interns were assigned to 21 San Diego businesses. Due to the ongoing demand for software, nine more interns are currently being recruited. Staff came from local schools and campuses, including UC San Diego, San Diego Mesa University, San Diego Code School, and many others.

Welfie employs only four people, two of whom are founders, and they are paid in exchange for stock deals. Welfie initially focused on a heart health program, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, it quickly began developing software to monitor students and staff for symptoms.
“Our interns have helped us improve the functionality of this COVID-19 app,” said Moyo. “In short, they all had a huge impact on us.
