Anyone wishing to enter this major must first be admitted to Penn College. Admission to this elective is based on additional requirements beyond college admission. Details are available on the Selected Admission Criteria and Process webpage.

All students offered a reserved seat in this major must have a math/science score of 2.5 or higher and an overall graduating GPA of 2.5 or higher before entering the first nursing course. If the student does not complete the required grade calculations, the student will lose their place and transfer to the nursing major. Requalification for the major will be required during the next selection period and will follow the current selection criteria. In addition, all students must earn a grade of “C” (2.0) or better in all NUR, CHM, and BIO courses; if any of these courses has a lower grade, the course must be repeated.

The following grading system applies to all nursing courses in this major. No rounding of grades:

Child abuse clearances and criminal background checks are required for this specialty as defined in clinical partnership agreements. Agencies may prohibit students from participating in clinical experiences at their sites if they have a criminal record or a positive drug test. According to the contract for Pennsylvania College of Technology students to be at clinical sites, the agencies have the right to request random drug tests. Failure to complete clinical experience, fieldwork, or internship will result in failure to achieve program and course outcomes. Students can speak to their program director for further clarification.

Nursing Associate Of Science (rn)

The Pennsylvania Board of Nursing advises that a drug-related conviction and/or a felony or two felony convictions may result in the denial and/or revocation of a nursing license. Pursuant to the Professional Nursing Act of 1951, P.L. 317, No. 69, as amended, the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing shall not issue a license to an applicant convicted of an offense prohibited by the Act known as the Controlled Substances, Drugs, Devices, and Cosmetics. Convicted of a crime involving a controlled substance in a court of the United States or any other state, territory or country, unless at least 10 years have passed since the conviction.

Penn College amends the federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989. Under this Act, all forms of marijuana, including medical marijuana, are classified as prohibited controlled substances. In addition, non-prescription alcohol, illegal drugs, and legal drugs that interfere with a student’s ability to perform their academic duties are strictly prohibited. Students are drug tested at various stages of the program. Please note that a positive drug screen result for marijuana is considered positive and the student will be removed from the program even if the student is legally certified to use medical marijuana and/or has a valid medical marijuana license issued. according to applicable state law.

This major follows transfer standards established by the college, which requires a minimum grade of “C” in transfer courses. Official transcripts must be sent to the Pennsylvania College of Technology Office of Admissions. The college may also require official high school transcripts or an official GED score report. Students seeking spring admission must submit an official transcript and a copy of their Pennsylvania LPN license by December 1st. Applicants who have transferred from other colleges will have their nursing credits evaluated by a Penn College Nursing staff member upon entering the major.
