Mechanical Engineer Salary Entry Level

Mechanical Engineer Salary Entry Level – Mechanical engineering is a popular branch of engineering that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, focuses on engineering tasks in the planning and design of tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically operating equipment. They also often oversee the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of vital equipment such as central heating, gas, water and steam systems. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ occupational employment statistics, mechanical engineers have a wide range of jobs, which may be part of the reason why the U.S. has a large workforce of 303,440 mechanical engineers.

The future of mechanical engineers is stable. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of mechanical engineers is projected to grow by 4% over the next 20 years from 2018 to 2028, which is a fairly average growth rate.

Using occupational data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we analyzed and aggregated average mechanical engineering salaries by state across the United States. Read on for a complete breakdown of where mechanical engineers make the most and the least money.

Demand In Canada For Mechanical Engineers In 2023

According to the BLS, the national average annual salary for mechanical engineers is $92,800, about $40,000 more than the average annual salary for all occupations of $51,960. Of course, you don’t get that kind of salary everywhere. Due to many factors such as supply and demand, industry type, taxation and policy, geography is an important condition that affects the salary of mechanical engineers.

Alaska is the No. 1 state for mechanical engineering salaries, but Colorado, at No. 7, is also impressive. From 2013 to 2018, the average salary for mechanical engineers in Colorado saw the largest increase of 20.7%, from the current $86,340 to $104,220. Third-ranked Maryland also saw healthy growth, rising 15.9 percent from $94,840 in 2013 to $109,960 in 2018.

As mentioned earlier, industries in these states can affect mechanical engineer salaries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the highest-paying industry for mechanical engineers is oil and gas extraction, with an average annual salary of $126,880. This partly explains Alaska’s No. 1 spot due to its prominent energy industry, along with other top states like Texas and Louisiana. Other industries where mechanical engineers earn the most are waste treatment and disposal, restoration and other waste management services, petroleum and coal product manufacturing, and spectator sports.

Factors such as the cost of living in a state can affect the prevailing wage in that state. If a state has lower costs of living — such as cheaper housing, food, utilities, health care, and/or transportation — wages may not be as high as in other states. So a state with a low average salary for a mechanical engineer might look bad at first glance but considering the cost of living is the key as your salary could be as high as a mechanical engineer in Alaska who earns the most but burns money sometimes One of the most expensive countries in the United States.

Here are the 10 states with the lowest average mechanical engineering salaries, with the #1 lowest-paying state:

During the five-year period from 2013 to 2018, only Arkansas, North Dakota and Montana saw average mechanical engineering wages decline. Wages rose in all other states.

Below are the average annual salaries for mechanical engineers in all 50 states from 2013 to 2018. Yep, it’s that time of year again. Based on how you or your business performed last year, most people will see a slight increase in salary in January. It’s this time of year that Canada’s professional organizations and regulators release their latest salary surveys to ensure their members stay abreast of their peers.

In Alberta, engineers and geoscientists are regulated by APEGA (Alberta Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists). APEGA represents 74,000 individual professional members and 4,500 licensees (or firms).

Engineering Branches In India

In 2014, earnings for engineers in Alberta ranged from $80,000 for recent graduates to $380,000 for senior executives. A mid-level engineer with 10 years of experience earns an average of $150,000, while a junior manager earns closer to $200,000, including bonuses. Not surprisingly, bonuses make up a larger proportion of total compensation among higher-level executives. Most surprisingly, engineering co-op students (or interns) earned as much as $55,000 a year in 2014, or just over $1,000 a week.

For those working in the earth sciences (mainly geologists, but also geophysicists), the results are even better. A recent graduate can expect to earn $86,000 a year, while senior executives can earn around $315,000, including bonuses. Geoscientists with 10+ years of experience earn about 30% more than engineers with similar experience. Internships for Geology/Geophysics students earn an average of $1150 per week.

Note: The average salary for geoscientists in senior management is reported to be $787,000, but the results are not graphed because results are distorted by a few multi-million dollar expenditures.

Earth scientists include geophysicists and geologists who study the properties of the Earth. Geoscientists are critical to oil exploration because they determine the location, nature, and structure of oil or oil sands deposits.

For senior engineers (with more than 10 years of experience), the results are fairly average across engineering disciplines. Not surprisingly, petroleum engineers occupy several executive positions, closely followed by mining engineers.

Not surprisingly, those who work directly for oil and gas producers fare best. At the top management level, engineers employed by infrastructure and utilities companies paid the most, likely because stocks performed better in 2014. The lowest paying industries are smaller consulting firms and government agencies, but not by much.

On average, Calgary reported higher wages than Edmonton, most likely due to Edmonton’s higher production than Calgary’s EPCs and oil companies. A senior engineer (with more than 10 years of experience) reported an average gross salary of $156,000 in Calgary, compared to $131,000 for a similar position in Edmonton. The average gross salary in Fort McMurray is slightly higher at $166,000.

Regardless of city, base salaries are relatively similar across the province, with an average salary of around $74,000 for a graduate or engineer-in-training (EIT). However, EITs working in Fort McMurray report significantly higher overall compensation due to more opportunities for paid overtime (in addition to the normal 40-hour workweek). Total compensation for Fort McMurray graduates in 2014 was just over $100,000.

Become A Mechanical Engineer In 2021? Salary, Jobs, Forecast

For geologists and geophysicists, graduates can expect to earn $86,000, including bonuses. Most geoscientists are located in Calgary, so no data are reported for Edmonton and Fort McMurray. But one would expect geoscience graduates to command the highest salaries at Fort McMurray.

Experienced contracting engineers report an average hourly wage between $100 and $153. hours; the contractor is expected to work approximately 1500 to 1700 hours in 2014. This equates to an annual salary of $150,000 to $260,000. However, contractors often have little opportunity to receive bonuses and benefits other than travel and subsistence allowances.

About 8% of APEGA members hold advanced degrees, the majority of which are master’s degrees. Only 1% reported having a Ph.D. The rest have a 4-6 year bachelor’s degree.

Overall, women make up about 15 percent of APEGA’s registered members. For young engineers and graduates, the figure is closer to 25%, but drops to 8% in more senior roles. Surprisingly, only 15% of trainees are women, and this number is not expected to increase in the next few years.

Of The Highest Paying Engineering Jobs (plus Job Outlook)

For geologists and geophysicists, women make up 25% of registered members. This number rises to 40% for members with less than 10 years of experience. At more senior management levels, however, the percentage of women drops to 9%, not much better than that of engineers at the same level.

There was no statistical difference between male and female engineers of the same experience level. In fact, women at top management and executive levels report slightly higher total compensation than men.

Engineering salaries in Alberta are by far the highest in Canada, not only for graduates, but for all experience levels.

Mechanical Engineer Salary Entry Level

There are more senior positions for engineers in Alberta than anywhere else in Canada, especially in the oil and gas industry, including at the CEO level. This partly explains why engineer salaries are much higher in Alberta than anywhere else in the country. In fact, University of Alberta engineers earn 40% (!) more than University of Waterloo engineers, simply because they are more likely to work in Alberta.
