Poem Casey At The Bat – Yesterday, Ernest L. Celebrated the 125th anniversary of Thayer’s iconic baseball poem “Casey at the Bat.” Fans of the poem will definitely want to compare Jaegler’s rendition to the classic 1909 recording by De Wolf Hopper available through the library’s National Jukebox.
Both recordings, of course, owe their existence to the text of the poem, which originally appeared on page 4 of the June 3, 1888 issue of The Daily Examiner in San Francisco. Digitized image of the page I present here a scan of the page from the library’s microfilm paper copy:

As you can see, the poem appears smoothly in the fourth column of the page; Apparently the editors had no idea that “Casey” would become the most popular baseball poem ever written! To this day, the story of the hometown slugger who defied crowd expectations continues to delight readers, even as it hits too close to home for millions of baseball fans everywhere— and as a Philadelphia Phillies fan, I’m definitely a nobody. Exception Happy Birthday, Casey!

I bought this picture for my office at my new job as a public defender, and it’s perfect! The print is of good quality and the poster was sent in a tube so it was not damaged on arrival.
