Annie’s Santa Fe was a popular Mexican restaurant in the 1980s and 90s, with locations in several local malls, including Oak Park Mall and Bannister Mall. Bannister Mall I remember visiting. This may have been the first time I went to Tex-Mex when I was young, and it went beyond American-style tacos and cheesy enchiladas. You may remember these home-style tacos made with hamburger buns, shredded cheese, and broken taco shells. Annie offers more ambitious dishes and has interesting desserts and drinks.
My mother remembered that they had a good spinach enchilada that was “hard to find in Kansas City.”
Kansas City Area Restaurants You’ll Never Eat At Again, Part 2
I understand that Annie’s was a social hot spot for local youth in Santa Fe in the 1980s. Don’t remember hanging out there, but it had a great bar, cheap margaritas, and all kinds of delicious food.
As a child growing up in the 1970s, my mom and dad would go to Jasper in 75 every time we had a daycare.
And Wornall (Waldo). They were dressed up so I assumed it was an “authentic” restaurant. I suspect my parents discovered it in the late 1960s, when we were a few blocks away. My father remembers going there a lot. The Mirabelle family still operates the bakery in South Kansas City, a popular destination for Italian food. The Waldo’s lasted 44 years until 1997, when the family sold the property to Walgreens.
KC Masterpiece Barbecue Sauce was originally created in 1977 by Richard E. “Rich” Davis, M.D. After the success of his sauce, Davis created a local chain of five local barbecue restaurants. The last one was closed in 2009.

I’ve never had the chance to eat at one of these restaurants, but I’ve always loved the nationally distributed sauces. When I lived in Washington, D.C. In the 1990s, I could walk into any store and find a bottle reminiscent of Kansas City.
Mama Tio’s is a popular, family-owned Mexican restaurant located on the Paseo in South Kansas City. Opened in 1979, the restaurant closed in 2019. Along with regular Mexican offerings, Mama Tio’s specialties include Mama’s Loaded Fritters, Potacos, Tio’s Chimichangas and Sancho Supremes.
As a kid, one of my family’s favorite dinner spots was Puchch’s Restaurant, which used to be in Meadow Village on Mission Rd. and 83rd. Our family ate lunch in the cafeteria after church in the late 1970s. I am pretty sure that the main reason for this distance to church at this time is after lunch. My favorite option was the chicken, biscuits and gravy. The mac and cheese was pretty good too.
Puch had several places around. It’s your classic cafeteria food where you push a plate across the table and point to the food you want. Basic American comfort food done very well. Suitable for families and popular with the elderly.

Sam Wilson’s is one of those family restaurants that has the kind of atmosphere that you can’t forget if you were a kid. In many ways, restaurants on 103rd Street in South Kansas City in the 1970s foreshadowed the fast food restaurants of the 1990s. See the picture above. Looks like “Country” is happening on TGIF Fridays, right?
I remember as a kid, Sam Wilson’s was the first place I tried a “big” salad as an adult. We will take these
