Salary For Entry Level Mechanical Engineer – Yes, it’s that time of year again. Depending on how you or your company performed over the past year, most people will see a small increase on their payroll in January. It’s this time of year that Canadian professional associations and regulators release their latest salary surveys to ensure their members stay on top of their peers.
In Alberta, engineers and geoscientists are regulated by APEGA (Alberta Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists). APEGA represents 74,000 individual professional members and 4,500 licensees (or companies).
Salary For Entry Level Mechanical Engineer
In 2014, engineering earnings in Alberta ranged from $80,000 for fresh graduates to $380,000 for senior executives. A mid-level engineer with 10 years of experience earns an average of $150,000, while a junior manager earns close to $200,000, including bonuses. It is therefore not surprising that bonuses make up a larger part of the total remuneration of senior executives. Most surprisingly, in 2014, students (or interns) at tech co-ops earned as much as $55,000 a year, or just over $1,000 a week.
Highest Paying Engineering Jobs
For those working in the earth sciences (mainly geologists, but also geophysicists) the results are even better. A recent graduate can expect to earn $86,000, while senior executives can earn about $315,000, including bonuses. Geoscientists with more than 10 years of experience earn approximately 30% more than engineers with equivalent experience. Internships for geology/geophysics students earn an average of $1150 per week.
Note: The median salary for executive level geoscientists is reported to be $787,000, but the results are not graphed because the results are biased by a few multi-million dollar payouts.
Geoscientists consist of geophysicists and geologists who study the properties of the earth. Geoscientists are crucial to oil exploration because they determine the location, nature and structure of oil or oil sands deposits.
For senior engineers (with more than 10 years of experience), the results are fairly balanced across engineering disciplines. Not surprisingly, petroleum engineers make up a larger percentage of executive positions, closely followed by mining engineers.
Is A Master’s Degree In Mechanical Engineering Worth It?
Not surprisingly, those who work directly for oil and gas producers fare best. At the senior executive level, engineers employed by infrastructure and utilities paid the most, likely because stocks outperformed in 2014. The lowest-paying sectors are smaller consulting firms and government agencies, but not by much.
Calgary reports higher salaries on average than Edmonton, most likely because Edmonton has more manufacturing while Calgary has more EPCs and oil companies. A senior engineer (with more than 10 years of experience) reported average total compensation of $156,000 in Calgary compared to $131,000 for the equivalent position in Edmonton. The median gross pay in Fort McMurray is slightly higher at $166,000.
Regardless of the city, base salaries are relatively similar across the county, with an average salary of about $74,000 for a recent graduate or engineer-in-training (EIT). However, EITs working in Fort McMurray reported significantly higher overall compensation due to more opportunities for paid overtime (in addition to the normal 40-hour work week). The total compensation for new Fort McMurray graduates in 2014 was just over $100,000.
For geologists and geophysicists, recent graduates can expect an annual salary of $86,000, including bonuses. Most geoscientists are in Calgary, so no data has been reported for Edmonton and Fort McMurray. However, new geoscience graduates are expected to earn the highest salaries at Fort McMurray.

Experienced contractor engineers report average hourly wages between $100 and $153; contractors are expected to log about 1500 to 1700 hours in 2014. That equates to an annual salary of $150,000 to $260,000. However, contractors typically have little chance of bonuses and benefits other than travel and accommodation expenses.
About 8% of APEGA members have a higher degree, mainly a master’s degree. Only 1% said they had a Ph.D. The rest have a bachelor’s degree of 4 to 6 years.
Overall, women make up about 15 percent of APEGA’s registered members. For young engineers and recent graduates, the figure is closer to 25%, but falls to 8% in senior positions. Surprisingly, only 15% of interns are women, and this number is not expected to improve in the coming years.
For geologists and geophysicists, women make up 25% of registered members. This number rises to 40% for members with less than 10 years of experience. At higher levels of management, however, the percentage of women falls to 9%, not much better than engineers in similar positions.
Pursue Masters In Mechanical Engineering In Canada
There is no statistical difference between male and female engineers with the same level of experience. At senior management and executive levels, women actually reported slightly more total compensation than men.
Engineer salaries in Alberta are by far the highest in Canada, not just for recent graduates, but for all levels of experience.
Alberta has more engineers than anywhere else in Canada, especially in the oil and gas industry, including at the CEO level. This partly explains why engineer salaries in Alberta are much higher than anywhere else in Canada. Engineers from the University of Alberta even earn 40% (!) more than engineers from the University of Waterloo, simply because they are more likely to work in Alberta.
→ 75% of companies expect to hire more employees in 2015. → 94% of companies expect salary increases in 2015, with an average increase of 3.5%. → Internships of students working in the oil fields average $1000-1150 per week. Not too shabby! → Only 35% of engineers and geoscientists in Alberta have a company-sponsored registered retirement plan.
The Countries Where Talented Engineers Can Achieve Great Success
The report clearly highlights Alberta’s tight labor market and the scarcity of skilled workers, especially geologists, who are essential to mining and oil exploration. This salary survey was of course conducted in the summer of 2014, before oil prices started to fall. It will be interesting to see how much (if any) the actual increases are in 2015.
