This week marks the 10th anniversary of the first anti-government protests that began in March 2011 in Damascus and Aleppo. But this anniversary only reflects the Syrian revolution, not the Syrian civil war. It started months after the Syrian civil war. The regime’s security forces have already killed thousands of people. The violence unleashed by President Bashar al-Assad has sparked the worst man-made disaster since World War II, so unimaginable that the United Nations officially stopped trying to count the death toll in January 2014. The conflict is not ‘unfinished’. – and it never should have.

The most recent UN estimate of 400,000 deaths was given in 2016 by then-Syrian Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura. Still, numbers do not reflect human value. It was impossible to count the number of people who died in the daily bombardment and how many died of their wounds, died of preventable diseases or starved to death from the brutal siege – or hundreds. Thousands of Syrians are missing, summarily killed or tortured in the Assad regime’s death camps. The cycle of suffering goes beyond the dead: rape victims, victims, traumatized children, widows and widowers, the displaced. This is an endless list.

The world doesn’t seem interested in counting anymore. But what outsiders can do is talk about the source of the violence and name the perpetrators.

The Syrian civil war should not be defined by the defiance and bravery of those who took to the streets in 2011, but by the rhetoric used by Assad’s militias to strike fear into the hearts of the Syrian people: “Assad or nobody”. Assad or we burn the country. “This is the only promise the government has kept. This is why it is wrong to celebrate this date as the start of the Syrian civil war: Syrians did not choose to be subjected to a violent military attack because of one man’s lust for power; it was a crime against them.

The battle did not begin when the march began, and although most of the opposition was crushed or killed, it did not end. Syria is in shambles, sitting on top of territory held by the Assad regime, but in fact parts of the country are now under the control of groups backed by Russia and Iran. After “Assad or nobody,” the Syrian people now have Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah, Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin to add to the list. It is not peace; It is a series of military alliances that rely on daily violence to maintain their power.

The Syrian economy has collapsed to unprecedented depths, and even amid the extreme violence, the Syrian pound is depreciating daily. As of March 16, it was 4,550 Syrian pounds to the US dollar. For reference, its real value is about 50 Syrian pounds to the dollar; On average, the Syrian pound was trading around 600 to the dollar in 2016. But even before the recent changes, the government did nothing in the way of reconstruction, the areas we occupied years ago are still in ruins.

The regime’s allies in Iran and Russia will not fund reconstruction, instead looking to the European Union and others to destroy Syria’s infrastructure. The regime’s allies in Iran and Russia will not support reconstruction, instead looking to the European Union and others to destroy Syria’s infrastructure. The West will not open its coffers or end sanctions without progress in the political transition the Assad regime has pushed the country towards.

While the moral and ethical horrors of Assad regime change can be understood or ignored, the government, according to all available evidence of its behavior, will only use additional funds to build a security state and continue to use subsidies as weapons of war. , which the UN has shamelessly enabled from its offices in Damascus since day one.

The situation is worse in government controlled areas. Idlib is the last stronghold of the Syrian opposition, which is actually protected by Turkey. It is home to more than 3 million people, most of whom have been forcibly displaced from areas besieged and bombed with relentless brutality.

The local population has suffered from Turkish-backed opposition forces, accused of human rights abuses and summary executions, and recently recruited by Turkey’s independent lawmaker, Recep Tayyip. Erdogan, on the attack of foreign troops in Azerbaijan and Libya, or fundamentalists. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a former branch of Al Qaeda, has again been the victim of extreme violence.

What The Lessons From Putin’s War In Syria Could Mean For Civilians In Ukraine

The people of Idlib are trapped on all sides, facing the closed Turkish border on one side and government forces on the other. Although Turkey and Russia have stopped fighting in the area, areas of Idlib governorate are still under artillery fire from the regime, which has not backed down on an agreement to capture “every inch” of Syria. Idlib now faces the same dire future as the besieged, impoverished and lawless Gaza Strip, living at the mercy of military elites and international powers with almost no concern or involvement.

What little influence the West has on the ground in Syria is limited to small pockets around US forces, such as the Tanf border crossing with Jordan, and the Democratic Forces with their allies in northern Syria. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), mainly the US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), is a separatist group with human rights concerns and a staunch US ally and finds itself in an uneasy alliance with the Assad regime and Moscow. Despite having no infrastructure or political autonomy, the SDF finds itself in the awkward position of running an anonymous prison of Islamic State fighters.

Syria today is a failed, balkanized state in a state of conflict. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, hunger is on the rise, with 90% of the population living below the poverty line. Even with these staggering numbers, the regime and Russia continue to deliberately block international aid, a brutality that serves as a key ingredient in the regime’s grip on power.

While Syria’s future is yet to be written, the next 10 years are as painful as the last. It’s not just Syria’s ground map that’s stuck in confusion; A political and diplomatic process is almost complete. The war is not over, it has barely stopped, and suffering continues in a landscape so broken and so chaotic that even the world’s top leaders cannot accurately count the dead.

Syrian Refugee Crisis

Suffering is left only in Syria. Assad won nothing. There are no victors in the country’s future, only victims and perpetrators, and the international community stands by as millions are killed and displaced.

As we celebrate the anniversary of those 2011 protests, we should remember those who marched with flowers in hand and sang songs of peace, not those who burned the country to stop them. We can pay that respect less.

On October 6, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, came to give a speech at the IBM headquarters in Poughkeepsie, New York.
