Simple 2D images such as logos can be easily converted to 3D images using Blender 3D. The easiest way to do this is to first convert the image to a vector image using a vector graphics editor such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape. It shows you how to convert an image to a vector image and then convert the vector image to a 3D mesh using Blender 3D.

Movie inspired fan art is nothing new. But as many digital artists will attest, rendering a movie character in 3D is a huge undertaking. So far it is.

The software’s character creator plugin allows artists to quickly create 3D human models from 2D images. In this article, digital artist Peter Alexander demonstrates how to take a funny image of Pennywise from the hit horror movie IT and easily turn it into a complex 3D model using Headshot, ZBrush and Blender.

Alexander’s guide covers everything you need to know to get started, including selecting and preparing images, using the baking, mesh editing and shaping tools specific to Character Creator 3, in Photoshop, Adjusting the headshot mask manually, simulating symmetry with ZBrush and finally. , a crash course in using a third-party Blender plugin called Hair Tool to create hair.

Download the free trial version of the Headshot plugin here and learn how to easily create a fully animated 3D model of Pennywise from a single 2D photo.

After typing “Pennywise Bust” into Google Images, I found a picture of the clown from the hit movie IT. Please note that this image is for educational purposes only – please remember and respect the copyright of all source images.

To fully demonstrate how the headshot works, I made further adjustments to the image, including adding symmetry by copying and mirroring better sides, and reducing some of the shadows.

Once the photo was ready to go, I started the headshot. Once it has calculated the image, switch to the Sculpture Morph tool and the Image Matching tool. In this step, you’ll push, drag, and zoom the head shape using the Back function to “capture” any changes and reset the limits of the changes.

Close up of the source image exposure using the face expression editor. Once you’ve determined the closest image match, use the Image Redesign feature in the Image Matching Tools section.

Use the Repair Mesh tool on the teeth to make them look sharper. You can also adjust the teeth using the morph sliders included in the Headshot Morph 1000+ Pack.

The red nose is masked by the default masking options. To remove more detail from the source image, I used Photoshop to mask the nose, mouth and eye area by adding white.

I exported the character mesh to ZBrush via the GoZ function to do some work using a program called PureRef to simultaneously reference the source image.

While in ZBrush, I made adjustments to the eyes and teeth. Starting with the first, move the eye to the nearest center of the socket. Mask one of the eyes and click ReSym and Smart ReSym in the Deformation area. It may be necessary to soften the eye slightly, then re-smooth the ReSym and Smart ReSym

Import the file back into the character builder, set the bones to face automatically, then delete the eyes and add new ones. All mesh deformations must be corrected.

To clean up the texture completely and create a normal map, I split the full body basemash several times and masked everything except the head UV group. The Character Builder splits the mesh into the correct UV groups when GoZ is added to ZBrush.

In the Texture Map dialog, add the face texture created by the headshot. Select “Polypaint from texture” – this is where you can do some tweaking and create a clean texture map.

To create a regular map, use your favorite brushes to paint and add definition around the painted areas to highlight the details. I defined the eyebrows to add depth and highlight the cracks on his painted head.

Once done, go to the lowest section and pull out the normal map. It can be combined with the provided normal map using an image editor with layer composition capabilities (eg overlay).

I created the hair for Pennywise with a paid Blender plugin called Hair Tools. I started by exporting the Pennywise Mesh T-Pose OBJ file from Character Creator and importing it into Blender. I selected the skull cap in blender, duplicated the mesh and then separated it.

In particle editing mode, I froze the hair properly with the mouse, then increased the strand width to 20 (approx). When editing hair settings, I turned interactive management off and on. Once satisfied, I selected the particle to the curved hair and then the curved ribbons to the mesh ribbon.

Export the transparency map from the UV settings and export the hair mesh as an OBJ. Now back in the character creator, import the hair OBJ as an attachment.

I set the red hair texture to the base color and the opacity map was saved to the Opacity slot from Blender. Once you are satisfied with the hair arrangement, it can be saved as a reusable hair product. Here is some hair content I created as an example, you can download it from my YouTube video description (above).

This character is fully edited and ready to animate using iClone or any 3D tools. Here’s an example of iClone’s live-animated Pennywise using mocap.

When it comes to turning a flat image into a 3D mesh ready to send to a 3D printer, specialized software is an important step. In this article, we have proposed three programs. Obviously there are more, but we recommend these in particular. They all have their own learning curve that requires you to come to grips with the intricacies of the program. Too few allow the ball to be released immediately. Also, it’s worth taking the time to figure out the program exactly before starting the project.

View in Litofen allows you to read the 3D mesh for printing in one of two ways. The first option is to upload a photo. However, this requires some trial and error. Not all images are immediately suitable for 3D conversion – for example, they may have too much clutter. You also need imaging equipment that is good enough to do the job. Fortunately, modern smartphones with this feature are becoming more and more affordable!

Using the Alice Vision photogrammetric system, Mushroom is an open source 3D reconstruction software. Photogrammetric applications are increasingly used primarily in media, including face reconstruction from archaeological excavations. Although expensive for what it takes to create a grid, the program itself is free and open source. This means that if you have the knowledge, you can develop it according to your needs.

Selva3D is a program that automatically overlays any image you load into a 3D mesh, ready to save and send elsewhere or clean up and work with yourself. Once purchased, you can create an unlimited number of grids.
